“Since joining Thomson in 2017 I have worked on a wide range of projects and have been on some excellent training courses, including a five-day tree climbing and aerial rescue course. Thomson’s collaborative culture and friendly office atmosphere makes for a great working environment.” – Hannah R, Assistant Ecologist
“I am currently an assistant ecologist at Thomson, in my first year with the company. So far, I have undertaken bat, reptile, GCN, and phase 1 surveys for the company, on large and small-scale projects. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first survey season with Thomson, they provided good training and are committed to your personal development within the company and as an ecologist.”– Katie R, Assistant Ecologist
“I started at Thomson in 2016 and over the last three years I have been provided with excellent training and support giving me the opportunity to develop and progress to an ecological consultant. I find the scale and variety of projects that we work on stimulating and I am always exposed to new experiences allowing me to grow as an ecologist and continue my professional development. I enjoy working alongside like-minded colleagues in a friendly team environment.” – Phil J, Ecologist
You’ll be joining a happy, friendly workplace, guided by our values of Respect, Integrity, Support and Excellence. As a fixed term member of the team, you’ll enjoy all the benefits we have to offer, including fantastic on-the-job training, 25 days annual leave (pro-rata), discounted gym membership, free parking and regular social events.
We have multiple opportunities for Assistant Ecologists to help support our terrestrial ecology teams throughout the UK, in the busy field season, and are particularly keen to hear from those based within an hour’s commute of Guildford or Cardiff (or willing to relocate), who have GCN or bat licences or are proactively working towards gaining their licence.
This is a great opportunity to learn some practical survey and mitigation techniques in a range of species and habitats as well as gaining experience of working in a busy independent environmental consultancy. Many of our previous assistant ecologists have gone on to secure full time permanent positions with us.
You’ll need to be fully available from the start of May until the end of September, have a car, full UK driving licence and be willing to travel and stay away from home regularly. Accommodation and mileage will be paid for, and a generous subsistence allowance will be given when staying away from home. Whilst we are ideally looking for Assistants to join our Guildford and Cardiff teams, we are also interested to hear from applicants located in the Nottingham, Birmingham and London areas.
If you have an ecological background, but would prefer to be office based, we have several opportunities based at our Cardiff office, which may also be of interest, please do get in touch.
