Hydrology and Hydrogeology

Hydrology & Hydrogeology

Hydrologists apply scientific knowledge and mathematical principles to mitigate water-related problems in society and environmental protection.

Hydrology has evolved as a science in response to the need to understand the complex water systems and help solve water problems.

Critical to this understanding is the design and implementation of robust monitoring programmes and the interpretation of complex data sets.  We pride ourselves in being approachable and responsive, able to present complex information clearly and understandably to our clients.

Our aim

Our aim is to deliver practical water management solutions based on accurate surface and groundwater data.  This may mean deriving the best use of water supplies for urban developments, controlling river flooding or soil erosion, protecting or cleaning up pollution and flood risk assessment.

What we do

Our specialists are able to design monitoring networks across surface and groundwater systems, as well as implement existing programmes.  We carry out investigations into water levels and flows in rivers and wetland systems in order to determine hydrological functioning, using traditional methods and state of the art technology.  Investigative methods include walkover surveys, installation and monitoring of dipwells, boreholes and loggers for monitoring surface water levels. Groundwater monitoring comprises the measurement and monitoring of water quality and levels.  We are able to undertake a range of manual sampling techniques including bailing, purging and micro-purging, as well as the installation of data loggers for real time and remote monitoring

Modelling is used to help inform and predict the outcome of interventions.  The information is used to support infrastructure developments and the work of regulators.  We have worked on a variety of projects, both in the UK and internationally, including long-term hydrological monitoring for UK water companies and the design of new wetland habitats for local authorities and private developers.
