How did you get into ecology/environmental work?
I was always fascinated by nature and the outdoors and worked from late teens managing woodland and gardening. A university placement at an ecology consultancy really boosted my career.

Can you describe your position at Thomson EC? What does a typical day like?
I oversee Thomson’s terrestrial and freshwater ecology work, from strategic planning to day-to-day problem solving. A typical day might see me author a strategic plan to grow the business, approve an ecological report, liaise with a key client, support a project manager with an issue and mentor a staff member. It is a varied role and generally involves problem solving at a range of levels.
Proudest achievement/career highlight at Thomson? e.g. project you’ve worked on.
Being asked by Defra to author a British Standards Institution Flex (Flex 704 – Nutrient Reduction Standard) as part of Government’s development of standards for nature markets.
Do you have any hobbies and interests outside work?
With my family I keep bees, chickens and a vegetable patch. Depending on the season I play rugby (rather slower than I used to), drum in a band and perform as part of the Langport Mummers.
