Lauren Hornsby-Riley

Leeds Regional Office Manager & Senior Ecological Consultant

What qualifications do you have?

BSc (Hons) Ecology

How did you get into ecology/environmental work?

I studied Ecology at university and thoroughly enjoyed the course, so I knew it was a sector I wanted to work in. I always saw myself more in industry than in research, so the opportunity to balance site time with project management as an ecological consultant really appealed to me.

When did you join Thomson EC?

2017.

How many years of relevant industry experience do you have?

11 years

Can you describe your position at Thomson EC? What does a typical day like?

As I oversee ‘People’ in my AD role, my focus is the optimisation of the resourcing, overall structure, and non-technical skill sets of our Ecology team – ensuring we have a well-balanced team structure in place, and that they are equipped with the necessary skills and support to deliver high-quality project outcomes safely and efficiently. Day-to-day, I work within the Leeds and Manchester teams as a project manager and supporting with the projects of others. As people resource is a huge part of delivering our work, I also support our excellent Resourcing Manager who ensures projects are staffed effectively, aligning the right people with the right roles to meet project demands and deadlines.

Are there any relevant subject matters you are passionate about?

I’m passionate about supporting the professional development of our ecology team members, particularly with non-technical skills in project and people management.

Proudest achievement/career highlight at Thomson? e.g. project you’ve worked on.

I’m proud to have contributed to the early career development of so many junior ecologists, as I’ve been a part of offering many individuals their first role in the industry. Having them stay on as permanent team members and seeing them progress through their own careers is very rewarding.

Hobbies and interests outside work?

I like to try my hand at a good craft project – sewing, embroidery, mosaics, felting… The list goes on!

Why should individuals/organisations choose to work with Thomson EC?

The team are reliable, expertly knowledgeable, and passionate about delivering positive outcomes for our clients and the environment. It’s such a friendly and collaborative company to work for, I value the generosity of my colleagues across the business in sharing their skills and knowledge to help one another.
