This intervention came after backbench MP Andrew Mitchell asked Communities Secretary Greg Clark to call-in the plan because it includes green belt boundary changes designed to allow 6,000 new homes to be built at Langley in Sutton Coldfield which is Mitchell’s constituency.
There is considerable local and vocal opposition to the proposed green belt development.
The development plan including revised green belt boundaries was approved by a planning inspector two months ago.
John Clancy, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “Clearly it is very disappointing that the government has chosen to make this decision in spite of the positive outcome of the independent planning inquiry.
