Andrew Poynter

Principal Arboricultural Consultant

What do you do at Thomson?

I’m the Principal Arboricultural Consultant providing technical and strategic advice on tree management. I’ve been at Thomson since February 2021.

Why do you like working at Thomson?

There’s a supportive and collaborative approach. We have a wide range of disciplines that regularly come together on larger projects

What does a typical work day look like?

Starts with checking emails, then heading to the (home) office or out to site. I have line management for in-house and external staff so much of the day is spent coordinating and endeavouring to win work, along with ensuring it is delivered.

What made you choose this career path?

I didn’t! I started in a bank. But got bored of that and went to Merrist Wood to do Countryside Management (Practical Habitat Management) and then straight into the 10 week tree surgery course. Progressed through tree climbing (surgery) to consultancy.

Do you have any pets?

A liver (chocolate) Cocker Spaniel called Monty. He is a total hooligan, in an adorable way…!

What’s your biggest pet hate?

People being late for meetings / appointments.
