Epibenthic surveys, using video and stills photography as a tool to identify species and habitat types (biotopes), is becoming widely used by both governmental and commercial organisations.
This technique allows assessment of the seabed without taking a physical sample to keep disturbance of the environment to a minimum. Since its first use, our taxonomists have provided a service in the analysis of video and stills both on-board vessels and back at our laboratory facility.
What we do
Thomson’s dedicated team of analysts use the most up-to-date technology to undertake the epibenthic survey, ensuring we can conduct the analysis as efficiently as possible. We use the appropriate software to ensure the data we collect is both meaningful, valid and meets the requirements of regulatory bodies.
Our survey team have completed video and stills analysis from UK and European waters which has allowed us to build up an extensive reference collection of biotopes and individual taxa to aid in analysis.
