Newt mitigation season starts

We have now entered the season when newt trapping programmes can begin. Newts can be captured in ponds between March and June, and on land between March and October.

Great crested newts and their habitats are fully protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Habitats Regulations. This means that a licence is required whenever disturbance of GCN habitat is likely to occur.

Mitigation techniques can involve the installation of newt fencing and pitfall traps as a means of trapping the great crested newts. Thomson Habitats have facilitated many newt trapping and translocating programmes, including the installation of well over 100km newt fencing in just the last couple of years. For information on different types of fencing please see our Types of wildlife fencing guide.
